  1. Curious to know if others do this. Seems like a natural thing to do but I've talked to so many many people who are blown away when they hear the technique. So honestly IDK. Leave some feedback if you have the chance. Thanks

  2. Been doing that for 35 years, Also I play a mind game with traffic, Like what would I do if that car/truck suddenly turned this way and that other car reacted and went that way. and so on.

  3. I think your concerns are only valid if you speed. ADV riding for me is rarely above 30kph. Any faster means the road is boring, dusty and I avoid them amap. At slow speed on technical roads, all my concentration goes to finding a good line and looking far ahead to avoid those crazy ford 150 drivers… (the offroad equivalent of honda civic drivers wearing caps backward…)

  4. Great tips – I have done this religiously for many years and it has saved me many times. I also ride with an assumption, similar to the mindset you have playing a video game, that everything is a potential threat, especially other drivers. I don't ride behind 18 wheelers who love to loose tire tread or construction vehicles with lots of hastily loaded tools and materials (I ran over a log once that feel out of the back of a truck). I don't allow myself to get boxed in by other vehicles. I also assume by default that other drivers are about to do something stupid and watch them closely. If I see someone pulling up to side entry to the lane I'm in I try and make eye contact with them to make sure they are looking directly at me. I also back off the throttle till I know they're aware of me. Just yesterday while heading up to the Virginia mountains, I saw a van approaching me in the other direction on a two lane road. The driver slowed to turn across my lane and I watched their front wheels and when they turned I immediately backed of the throttle and started to brake. Suddenly they cut across the road in front of me and thanks to my assumption I was prepared and instantly hit the brakes hard and was able to stop before slamming into the side of the van. The old lady driving looked right through me. That's what I call it, looking through you. I've seen it a bunch of times. I think people technically see us but somewhere in the back of their mind we are not perceived as a threat, like a car or truck, and this results in them ignoring their visual input and proceeding out into the road.

  5. Basically, be aware of your surroundings. The only time I've laid down my (street)bike in the last ten years was on a patch of gravel the diameter of a dinner plate. Had I been more aware, I might have seen it while making a left turn under a freeway overpass west of Winslow, AZ. I didn't know it at the time, but I sprained my left ankle despite wearing reasonably good adventure boots (I have peripheral neuropathy in my lower legs and can't feel anything in my feet). That, combined with the adrenaline rush of the lowside meant that I didn't know about the sprain until later in the day when I discovered I could barely walk. Not a very good thing on day 2 of a 7 day ride 🙂

  6. Ever since you showed me this one I use it constantly. It makes a lot of sense to pay attention to those factors because you are right, They LITERALLY tell you what to expect next. It's those milliseconds that make the difference.
